The Basel Graduate School of History (BGSH) offers a structured graduate studies programme in historical sciences, aimed at successfully attaining doctoral degrees.
Doctoral students at the BGSH study within a theoretical, methodological and content dense network which provides the opportunity for intellectual debate and international interconnection.
Theses with widely differing subjects can be written at the BGSH, from the following areas of research covered at the Department of History:
The BGSH regularly awards starter grants which enable students to develop their own project application to obtain financing for a doctoral thesis.
Questions at the centre of current research and debate at the BGSH include the relationship between the local and global, the nexus of micro and macro perspectives and the significance of mediality for historical events, structures and developments. The dissolution of boundaries and shift of focus for historical spaces are also of current interest, as are trans-epochal questions of continuity and change, and the connected issues of the exploration of historical dimensions of depth and analysis of the structuring of time.
